New & Used Sand Rails
The Sand Rails are operated on actual sand dunes, such as Glamis, Pismo and Rasor all located in California, and also at St Anthony Dunes in Idaho and Little Sahara in Utah.
Today the new models use water-cooled engines which are much more efficient and these are often Subaru Boxer engines or Ford Ecotech engines. Available now is the new computerized engine that incorporates better suspension and steering geometry for good handling.
These Sand Rails have increased in popularity and the industry has grown dramatically. These new turn-key vehicles cost between $10,000 to $100,000, depending on the design. One popular vehicle seats four adults with 400 hp and weighs about 2000 pounds when empty. Some jump two to four feet off the ground and others exceed heights of ten feet. The use of helmets and goggles are highly encouraged in some areas. In many duning areas all sand vehicles which includes motorcycles, Quads, Sand Rails and UTVs/Side by Sides requires a whip antenna with a flag at the top at least 8 feet off the ground to avoid collision as the vehicles go over the sand dune hills.
Sand Rails have been used by the Military such as the Chenowth Light Strike Vehicle. The Navy Seals still use these today. These vehicles have been modified for a third seat above the engine to control a .50 cal machine gun.
